Building a Family Investment Policy

A written investment policy turns intentions into a framework that holds steady when markets do not.

An investment policy statement is a written document describing a family's objectives, time horizon, risk tolerance, liquidity needs, and the principles guiding how the portfolio is managed.

Its value is less in any single decision than in consistency. When markets are volatile, a policy agreed upon in calmer times offers a reference point and helps avoid reactive choices.

A strong family policy also reflects what sits outside the portfolio: a business, real estate holdings, concentrated positions, or expected inheritances. These shape how much risk the liquid portfolio should carry.

Policies should be reviewed regularly and updated as circumstances change. Involving the next generation in that review can be one of the most practical forms of financial education.
